# T015 — Benton County Marine Camera Status
The [[Benton County Sheriff's Office]] gave two incompatible current-facing descriptions of Marine Unit camera capability: a direct FOIA email says the Marine Division has no cameras on its boats, while the live official unit page says it uses boat-mounted infrared cameras. The August 3 follow-up reports no responsive reconciliation records and says the webpage most likely needs updating. That makes stale public copy the leading explanation, while the lack of dated inventory or disposition records prevents a complete historical account.
## Statement A
In the 2026-07-22 FOIA response, BCSO states: “our marine division does not have cameras on our boats” ([[Benton County SO Camera Locations and System Status]], Gmail message `19f8a34219dd9e6f`). Asked for an inventory or removal record that would reconcile the webpage, the custodian replied on 2026-08-03: `"No records found, it will most likely just need to be updated"` (Gmail message `19fc92818daf13aa`).
## Statement B
The official Marine Unit page says the unit uses “boat-mounted radar, infrared cameras, and underwater sonar.” The page was live when archived on 2026-07-22 and carries a `2026-03-25` modification timestamp (primary public record, [official Marine Unit page](../../web%20archive/2026-07-22/sheriff.bentoncountyar.gov/marine-unit.md)).
## Why it matters
The follow-up supports the current no-camera statement over the webpage but does not establish when equipment was acquired, removed, transferred, or retired. That distinction matters for separating current inventory from legacy capability and for assessing whether historical procurement, policy, maintenance, deployment, or retention records should exist.
## Resolution status
`bracketed` — the custodian's no-records search and statement that the webpage most likely needs updating make stale web copy the leading explanation. A dated Marine Division asset inventory, vessel-equipment list, or purchase/transfer/disposal record is still needed to establish historical equipment status and the timing of any removal.
## Discovery
Surfaced during the 2026-07-22 ingest by comparing the FOIA email to the live official Marine Unit page cited in the original request; moved to bracketed on 2026-08-03 after the custodian's supplemental no-records response.
## Notes
The sonar statements are not independently contradictory: the web page describes capability, while the email says sonar has not been deployed since a prior incident. Non-use over a period does not establish absence of the equipment.
